Progress on Hansfield Station as work to start on access road – Varadkar

Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport Leo Varadkar has announced further progress for Hansfield Station with work set to start on the vital access road this year.

Minister Varadkar said Hansfield Station will finally be able to open to the public when the access road has been completed.

“This marks real progress for Hansfield Station, which cannot open for use until a proper access road has been put in place. I look forward to work starting on the road so that the station will finally be able to offer regular services to passengers,” Minister Varadkar said.

The development follows the recent transfer of land for the road into public ownership. Irish Rail is currently preparing tenders, with a contractor likely to be selected within a couple of months. Work is due to start on the road later this year."

Hansfiled station opening in spring - if believe politicians!

According to local councillor(s) work to start next week on access road to Hansfield with the station opening in spring. Access road work will not include car parking due to legal case.

Car park is explicitly forbidden under the Hansfield SDZ

Good news, hopefully between that and the new timetable introducing better connections(looks like there is a train every hour arriving at Clonsilla ~6 minutes before each hourly Maynooth-Dublin train and something similar in the reverse direction, and finally a late night service) patronage will go up on the line. I took a morning peak Docklands train from Clonsilla during the week and there was fairly good loadings already onboard.

Transport Minister Leo Varadkar will open Hansfield station on June 28, providing a direct rail link to residents of Ongar, Clonee and Mulhuddart into Dublin city centre.

The station, which cost €10m to build, is part of the Hansfield Strategic Development Zone near Blanchardstown, where thousands of new homes are planned.

However, a road allowing access to the station was never built, meaning the station could not open.

The road has since been completed by Iarnrod Eireann at a cost of €1m.

Services will be provided every half-an-hour at peak times for commuters travelling from Hansfield into the capital.

Took train from Hansfield to Docklands on Friday evening. Two others got train at that time. Lots of 'drive-by' lookers at car parking. Counting about 15 cars doing drive 5 minutes I was on platform.

Couple of points noticed :
  • Really is like travelling back in time to Celtic tiger. Huge Ticket hall area, huge outside stair entrance etc
  • Really need signs inside ticket hall pointing out which platform is for Clonsilla/Docklands and which is for Dunboyne and M3 (just like at Clonsilla for example).
  • No sign on roundabout at start of access road pointing to station.
  • No signs of information near parking spaces on access road or station who is responsible for parking spaces and what is policy towards them (saw many people drive up road trying to find)
  • Hansfield not on Irish Rail app yet.
  • No dedicated cycle lane but cycle sheds at station.

On a last general point I believe station will be used Monday to Friday as awareness grows of station but no point station being opened Saturday and Sunday. With no direct services at weekends means very few will use.
