[12/02/2008] All routes - cancellations

Due to ongoing industrial relations issues there is a strong possibilty that there may be cancellations on some services. These will be ad hoc and random in nature and it is unlikely we will have details before they occur.

Trains effected most likely are those which where added in the new timetable and some others. This would indicate a refusal by staff to undertake work as overtime or a lack of cover due to staff calling in sick.

The perliminary best guesses are as follows

06:30 Portlaois - Heuston
17:35 Heuston - Carlow
19:30 Cork - Cobh
20:00 Cobh - Cork
20:30 Cork - Cobh
21:00 Cobh - Cork

Sunday Dublin Cork http://www.railusers.ie/forum/showthread.php?t=3745
and
Westport Dublin http://www.railusers.ie/forum/showthread.php?t=3601
also effected

So more than a day later Irish Rail admit they have a problem

Quote:

06 30 Portlaoise to Heuston & 17 35 Heuston to Carlow cancelled by Corporate Communications

Iarnród Éireann advises customers that the weekday 06.30hrs service from Portlaoise to Heuston, and weekday 17 35 Heuston to Carlow service are both cancelled currently due to operational problems.

Advice for 06.30hrs Portlaoise to Heuston customers

Customers from Portlaoise, Portarlington and Monasterevin are advised to travel on the 06.51hrs service from Portlaoise, which will stop additionally at Portarlington.

Customers from stations between Kildare and Heuston are advised to travel on the 06.59hrs Kildare to Heuston.

Advice for 17.35hrs Heuston to Carlow customers

Customers for Sallins, Newbridge, Athy and Carlow are advised to travel on the 17.50hrs Heuston to Galway service. Customers for Athy and Carlow will be transferred by bus from Newbridge.

Iarnród Éireann apologises to customers for the inconvenience caused.
If we knew they knew so why the delay?

Hurakan 14-02-2008 14:19

I have spoken to my local TD about it today! The reason Irish Rail did not want it in the public domain was becoz they had a clerical error in compiling the rosters when the new timetable was implemented in December. Do u remember the 06.30 portlaoise train did not go the first couple of mornings as sceduled? anyway rather than have egg on their face they have been told to communicate it as an operational problem. I bought an annual ticket this year because of the new 6.30am service! Otherwise I was going to drive to Newbridge/Kildare! Because I bought this ticket and Irish Rail have not provided the service due tot heir mistake can I sue them for breach of contact?

Mark Gleeson 14-02-2008 16:06

Its not a clerical error, its got very little to do with the 2008 timetable. Its very simple Irish Rail don't have staff to operate numerous trains and rely on staff to work rest days and overtime. That is bad management and planning and they are now getting stung

There is a likelyhood of a further 9 trains a day being effected, most of which existed in the 2007 timetable, that would bring the number to 18 trains effected in some way

As is usual Irish Rail are using a smokescreen to cover the show up, note Irish Rail have never admitted to the cancellations Cork Cobh

If anyone is delayed by more than an hour by having to get a later train, you have a legitimate claim for a partial refund.

plant43 14-02-2008 16:21

Mark - any indication as to what the further affected trains might be?

Mark Gleeson 14-02-2008 16:35

At this stage no and it wouldn't be productive to speculate.

Donal Quinn 18-02-2008 09:53

situation seemed vey fluid over the weekend - 14:35 Heuston->Galway actually ran despite being listed as not running

IE person in heuston told me that they 'found' a crew for that one!

Mark Gleeson 19-02-2008 15:18

Just confirm things remain exactly as posted last week.

6:30 Portlaoise Heuston
17:35 Heuston Carlow
19:30 Cork - Cobh
20:00 Cobh - Cork
20:30 Cork - Cobh
21:00 Cobh - Cork

Remain cancelled

Portlaoise & Carlow are not rostered and are overtime/rest day work. Cork Cobh cancellations to avoid Dublin Cork cancellations

Good news if there is any there won't be any more Mk3 or 2700 replacements on Sunday mornings out of Cork that problem sorted but the revised times remain in place on Sundays

There was to be a meeting last night, as reported by the media. This meeting did not take place.

Hurakan, welcome to the board.
my advice to you would be to first write to Irish rail and complain about this, pointing out you spent whatever your annual ticket cost to get the new early morning service. You will probably get no response, this is not so important.
Next you should complain to the national consumer agency, 1890 432432, complaining that Irish rail mislead you into paying for your annual ticket in contravention of the Consumer Protection Act. section 43 (3) (b) (ii)
Misleading consumers is a criminal offence since the start of last summer.

You probably won't get much satisfaction here either, but you could probably get recompense from the small claims court if your ticket cost is below the threshold, and you have given up on travelling by train if the service is no longer there.
you would need to keep some record of the original timetable listing the early train, and some daily record of the train not running.

I see you've talked to a td. assuming it's a opposition td, and you get no satisfaction from the national consumer agency , you might complain to your td about that too- the nca was set up by Micheal Martin and he's still the minister responsible -

If you do (or don't) get any satisfaction, let us know.

Mark Gleeson 19-02-2008 23:49

Further to Colms post since this is not industrial action Irish Rail do not have the usual escape clause

plant43 20-02-2008 11:11

Incidentally, I've been on Waterford trains heading into Dublin every morning this week and every morning the "train host" announces the times of the return trains to Waterford and every morning he says the 1735 to Carlow is running.

Mark Gleeson 21-02-2008 17:37

Its spreading

Rather worrying information has reached us that things are going to get worse, possibly starting on Saturday with all routes bar DART potentially effected.

As of yet we have no information on precisely what may be effected

Expect at the very least a repeat of last weekends array of changes/cancellations, http://www.railusers.ie/news/news.ph...2008&no=3.html

ThomasJ 21-02-2008 17:58

So trains on the Connolly side could be affected as well?

Will it be just Overtime affected services or could all/any be affected?

How come not DART, Are their drivers a seperate entity to Commuter and Intercity?

Mark Gleeson 21-02-2008 18:08

Any service which requires a driver to work a rest day is at risk, the 2008 timetable changes where extensive in Connolly so it very hard to know what may happen

DART drivers are on a totally separate pay and hours deal

Mark Gleeson 22-02-2008 13:52

13:18 Pearse - Drogheda is cancelled Saturday Feb 23rd, no notice given
14:30 Drogheda - Pearse is cancelled Saturday Feb 23rd, no notice given
15:05 Connolly - Sligo is cancelled Saturday Feb 23rd, no notice given
16:04 Maynooth Bray runs only to Connolly Saturday Feb 23rd, no notice given
17:32 Bray - Mullingar is cancelled Saturday Feb 23rd, no notice given
19:00 Sligo - Dublin cancelled bus transfer throughout

Mark Gleeson 22-02-2008 17:04

Amazing how we had 90% of this at 2pm but it takes till 5pm for IE to go public

Whats the likelihood of these new disruptions hitting weekday services?
