Commuter tickets
I'm starting a new job in Limerick but can't leave the Thurles area because my home is here. Commuter promotions start at 09:30am- up to the last train Thurles-Limerick return €16.50 but i will need to get the earlier train to Limerick so it would be €25.30
Is there any commuter promotion before 09:30 like a tax saver thing etc which would reduce this €25 maximum fare per day? Lets say with buying a commuter ticket it would work out at around €21 some offer like that. |
The taxsaver fare is €269 a month or €2690 a year if you can commit for that long.
http://taxsaver.ie/Ticket-Types/Rail...point-tickets/ I think those are the figures that are tax deductable, rather than net, so you could save between €800 and €1400 further pa depending on your tax rate. |
I'd be interested to hear what loads are like on the Thurles 0735 commuter. It's one of the few routes where even though the rail route is longer the road alternative is so poor/crosscountry that it should be doing well - probably why IE started it in the first place.
Incidentally, where does that train come from? If it's an extension of the 0640 Limerick-Limerick Junction running behind the 0712 departure from the Junction to Heuston (originally 0615 Cork) then people could get from Cork/Mallow to Thurles early without having to get the 0505 or wait for the 0715 and there might even be a trickle of Limerick-Thurles trade that fancied an extra 20 minutes in bed - is there something I'm not seeing there? A long term intent to start that train from Portlaoise perhaps? |

Just to be clear
Anyone can buy a monthly or annual ticket at face value To obtain the tax benefit it must be done through an employer as a deduction from salary or in certain cases in lieu of cash bonus in line with the legal arrangements under the finance bill. |
Found out there is actually a commuter service ticket from Thurles to Limerick. €73 a week though you need an ID card issued from Iarnród Éireann to use it. How I get there at the moment is via M7 outside of Nenagh or if I have business to do in Thurles first I go via the M8-N74-N24. I never seen the morning commuter service in Thurles, rumour it is a 2700(soon to be 2800) doing it. That would be a major put of if it is true.
