After nearly 2 years waiting its the Lisduff crossovers that are being replaced

yes, there has been a sudden rush on there, the new diagrams have been on site for well over a year, no idea why they havent put them in place before now.

These crossovers seems to have been last renewed in 2003 - are these upgrade works to higher speed rated crossovers rather than life expiry works?

dowlingm: I thought as much: there were crossover renewals not that long ago. What seems to be in preparation now is a complete renewal of the layout: new crossovers and turnouts to the loop: also all the sidings appear to have been lifted and new ones laid down. (Incidentally, the line limit is 80 on the up line, while the down line is subject to 25 mph as part of the preparation works.)

Mark G: you hope that these works will mean 90 or 100 through Lisduff: well I wouldn't bet on it: Ballybrophy was completely dug up and relaid at great expense and its still 70 mph. Limerick Junction has been re-signalled and all pointwork replaced, including high-speed crossovers, but it's still an incredible 25mph Up and Down for about a mile!. Even for stopping trains this imposes delays.

There appears to be gross incompetence in the Limerick area: the Junction is not the only place where a lot of money has been spent and the max speed is still a crawl.

Mark Gleeson 12-04-2012 21:35

Lisduff appeared to get a crossover recovered from Marino Point in Cork if I recall correctly to deal with a condition related speed restriction.

The works currently are full replacement of both crossovers and the loop entry/exit on new concrete bearers possibly with UIC60 rail.

Thanks lads, that does seem like a bit more work alright.

It would be nice if these fairly major works got a mention in the IE Projects page to distract from the big PROJECT DEFERRED on two of those that are there (if ye are reading IE web lads ye could at least drop those two to the bottom of the page from the top eh?) They are spending a lot of money here and should keep the public informed on what is going to come out of it.

I'm pretty spoiled at the moment because the local intercity operator is gone the complete opposite way with almost mindnumbing levels of detail about their current capital programmes on stations, infrastructure and rolling stock, which is vital given that they have managed to eke another $105m out of a Tory government that claims not to be fond of government spending.

I wonder why the 1705 Limerick-Ballybrophy is listed as "Bus" but the 1910 Ballybrophy-Limerick listed as "Intercity" on the Saturdays... they're not going to do the shunt to the branch are they?? (Do a search for Limerick-Roscrea return on the 21st, 28th or May 12th to see what I mean)

Thomas J Stamp 18-04-2012 16:20

no, sure there is no need to close the branch line the works are not affecting it. i would imagine it would be a lonely enough place though.

Colm Moore 03-05-2012 13:40

These works happen on 12-13 May also.

I did a return journey to Cork a few weeks ago and Lisduff had a 25 mph speed limit. When will it be lifted?

the track needs to bed down and settle, so give it a few months. the gas thing about it is that any time made up will be wiped out at the next station until the timetable is updated.
