Passenger numbers not as bad as people say

Well I was out on the 11:47 Limerick Junction Waterford today

There where a number of Dublin Clonmel passengers and quite a few Tipperary Waterford. Roughly 15 got off at Waterford thats not really bad when you consider how slow it is. Potential possibly

We left on time, arrived on time all stops, all stops announced, train was clean, stations seemed in good order no doubt helped by the staff in the signal box. Despite the dodgy track the ride wasn't bad (had similar in Wales on a similar line) and engine under the floor was rarely noticed.

So the second least used line in the country can manage a respectable customer service but hasn't many passengers funny that eh?

Now if only they would try wild notions like letting the early Waterford continue to Limerick immediately from LJ rather than holding so that Tipperary/Cahir/Clonmel commuter could happen :D

Which line is the least used then?

The Pheonix Park Tunnel probably:D

Rosslare Limerick Junction growth since the extra trains where added has put it marginally ahead of Nenagh.

Park Tunnel is very popular when it sees a passenger train but is listed as a freight only route

Not having any Sunday service on the Waterford to Limerick Junction line kills the weekender traffic stone dead. Provoding such a service (even one traineach way late afternoon) could boost traffic considerably.

Come to think about it there is a passenger service running Waterford Tipperary Portarlington Claremorris this Sunday. Its the only Sunday in the year when a passenger service operates. The usual Diocese of Waterford and Lismore pilgrimage to Knock (well Claremorris) runs

Depart Waterford at 06:10 (B800)
Depart Claremorris 17:30 (B500)

Calls all stations to Tipperary then Limerick Junction reverse (possibly twice) Portarlington reverse

Its a Mk3 push pull set with a 201 class locomotive, specially authorised but limited to 40mph Waterford Limerick Junction, with 10mph limit on Cahir Viaduct

Thats some penance for taking the train from Waterford! Ouch, I like trains but wouldn't spend that long on one.

I noticed that the Cork Dublin train passes through Limerick Junction without stopping at about 11:30. This means theres no good connection from Cork, Mallow or Tralee with the Waterford service that departs Lj around 12 o'clock (sorry not sure of the exact time). Is this a deliberate policy.

Mark Gleeson 27-06-2007 11:59

Connection departs at 11:47

Well the theory is that with Limerick Junction rebuilt there will be connections every two hours from both Dublin and Cork
