I'm afraid to say I agree that no further Luas lines should be built along medieval tracks otherwise known as Dublin streets. They are unsuitable for quality tramlines. You'll get them through but they are rubbish and agonisingly slow for passengers. The Red line is example enough-it's like 2 different systems; one from the Square to Fatima and the other from James' to Connolly. One is premetro standard and the other is 19th century stuff. It takes way to long to get from James' to Connolly.
The Lucan Luas would incorporate more on street running and be more rubbish than quality. Forget about it and go underground, you might get less km of line but at least it's good quality and expandable in future. The Red line should go into a tunnel after Fatima Mansions and head towards linking up with metro north etc. |
I've made my views on the Lucan Luas line known in the members section so I'm in agreement with Philip here.
Note from the articles above, the Lucan Luas seems to be completely developer driven and not to serve the exisitng sprawl in Lucan. Where is the DTA with its planning powers on this one? Seems to me that all of the planning decisions will be made far in advance of the DTA coming into existence. After all, we wouldn't want due process to be interfered with. |
