Coming to Thurles and Portlaoise soon
Quote:
I don't think they will get permission for an extension to the station building as Thurles town council has that building listed as a protected structure. It will be another week or two before any layout drawings will be uploaded. http://www.laois.ie/eplan41/FileRefD...210&LASiteID=0 |

I imagine half or more of the train stations int eh country are listed buildings, including Connolly, Heuston, Pearse and Cork - all have ticket barriers.

That's not how planning works in Thurles though it will get at least 30 objections from people who have nothing better to do than just writing submissions to Thurles TC and the design would be a boxy steel and glass extension at the front of the booking office onto platform 1 changing the exterior of the building which Thurles town council planning department didn't allow the last time Iarnród Éireann applied for permission.
I would like to see something modern like the station they built in Adamstown. Least you wouldn't have to cross that bloody footbridge all the time to buy a ticket and then cross back and we really do need a better shop in the station one that sells cigarettes. |

Plans are up now online. They will be putting a TVM on platform two but there will be no access to the footbridge to get to the booking office if you are an OAP or disabled or nothing under €50 in your wallet you will have to walk or drive along the R503 to the other side of the station to purchase a ticket. The extension looks boxy and will involve cutting out part of the roof and fascia. Can see Thurles town council saying no to this application.

I've split this off from the Kent station thread.
