Default Ticket Stamping

In a very messy Heuston last night, due to the 17:50 Galway MIA.
The board displayed this as 15 mins late so any Portarlington commuters switched queues to the 18:05 Portlaoise.

When the 18:05 started boarding, I noticed the queue was very slow. Found out why when I got to the top. The ticket checker was insisting on stamping multi-journey tickets, weekly/monthly etc which involved people having to stand about fishing them out of wallets.

He took my travel wallet off me (ticket & ID displayed in a clear windows) and said - 'We have to mark all the tickets at least once'.
'But it's a monthly, I've never had one stamped before'.
'We have to do it to prove travel'.

Huh? It's not like if it's unstamped I can get a refund. Any idea what all that was about?

And they really pick their moment, slowing a queue on a busy train that's already late boarding.

This started last week

I have some thoughts on what is going on, there has been talk of a coordinated hit on IE by exploiting various grey areas in Irish Rail procedures. I will admit I do my best to take advantage myself when I can

Equally there is now a sustained effort to catch fare evaders

And before anyone asks exit validation has been mentioned for Heuston

This is ocassionally happening but for some reason in Heuston it's always the same checker guy (nice tattoos), no one else does it.

I'm asking for a decent explanation the next time - I know they have every right to inspect my ticket - I wonder if the stamping is for IE so they know it's a kosher ticket?

If so, I'm sure the fraudsters can come up with a bit of purple ink and a date stamp.
