Could always run some Dublin services through to Midleton or Cobh to clear the platforms - the 22K x 3 ones anyway

While I'm not sure the suggestion was entirely serious...

Cobh has only one platform, so it could interfere with running on the Cobh services.

Midleton is a single track line, even though there are two platforms in Midleton and Carrigtwohill stations. So, any delay to the Dublin train could have a nasty effect on Midleton punctuality.

I don't think it would be any major effort to restore the second platform in Cobh though.

There are (probably) Cobh trains that meet the Dublin train at Cork. So in this case the Dublin train would just run through in place of the Cobh train. If the Cobh train runs now with no interfering it would work fine.

Something in the back of my mind says it was done before

Platform 5 was used for the departure of the Mk IV operating the 06:15 last Monday (30/1).

For some reason, the 06:30 to Tralee operated from platform 4, when it's usually the other way around.

As an aside, the only indication of this was the ticket checkers. All the boards in the station were wrong.
