Thumbs down Fares already increased

I regularly buy a return tkt from dublin to Belfast via the web. Before xmas, Irish rail added a 2euro admin charge. This meant a fare price of 38euro up from 36euro (18 each way). Now, on 16th January, they have hiked the fare, up from 18euro each way to 20euro each way. So, my fare is now 42euro, up from 36euro in October. This is rediculous. Where was the notification to customers either of these price hikes??? Not impressed at all

The matter is under investigation. Last increase Dublin Belfast Jan 8th 2008

I think Irish Rail can increase the fares without permission on the route as they are below the controlled levels currently.

Regardless there is a contract requirement to advertise any change in advance.

The cash fares have not increased on any route

The online fares have increased slightly but these are uncontrolled and not subject to restriction provided they are not more than the equivalent cash fare

Are cross-border fares controlled?

I'm not sure that's even legal under EU law as the route is theoretically open to competition.

The fares are subsidised and therefore controlled by who pays the subsidy

A day return bought at the station is 40, saving you 2.

40 euro + 2 euro booking fee + allocated seats any return journey within 28 days (10 euro singles available on some trains)

40 euro cash - day return only otherwise 55 euro for 5 day return

Monthly return is also 55 euro

Goodness. Imagine a walk-up fare like that for a UK Intercity journey...!
