Report shows a very dramatic fall in (Irish) rail traffic across the canal cordon between 2007 and 2011. During this period the number of passengers carried by train between 0700 and 1000 fell by almost 36% compared to a 14% drop in overall public transport usage and a 10% drop in the total number of persons crossing the canal cordon by all means.

The sharpest drop in usage occurred in 2009, probably reflecting the disruption associated with the Malahide viaduct collapse and the failure of Irish Rail to address the dismal journey times and unnecessary overcrowding which continue to characterise this service.
