I notice there is not one on the southbound entrance in Lansdowne Road.

Can the card be used in a normal reader if there is no smart card reader?

The turnstiles are fitted with readers http://www.taxsaver.ie/en/FAQs/Using...ver-Smartcard/

The only problem is the staff in Lansdowne like to turn off the gates

I wonder why IR decided to fit the readers different to most other cities. Normally they're on top in a dish which means you put the card there while you're walking through and it's easy to keep the card in range. The new position looks a bit more awkward that necessary.

Sorry for dragging this off topic but currently holders of annual bus and rail passes are being asked to go through the wide aisle. I have seen large notices to this affect at tara street and pearse.

Anyone know why ?

Was told about that when I was in Connolly last week

There is a problem with annual bus and rail tickets issued by Dublin Bus (separate photo id card), the smartcard element in the card triggers the reader on the gates and since its seen as invalid there is a pause before the mag stripe can be read and the gate opened, its not a new issue

Obviously Irish Rail could program the system to recognise the smartcard on the Dublin Bus issued tickets but that would piss off the RPA

This issue does not effect bus+rail tickets issued by Irish Rail (photo on ticket)

I'm not defending the awful decision by the DoT not to allow IR and DB smartcards to be shareable but this problem is also Irish Rail's fault. They knew that DB tickets could have a smartcard and still ordered a unit which puts the PCD right beside the magstripe reader, ensuring that this will happen. Separating them (like I said above) would have avoided all this.

Incompetence on several levels.

So whats the resolution to this ?

Will the current move [holders going through wide aisle ] be a long term move.

The layout of the new gates is similar if not identical to those in use elsewhere. Newer gates on the London underground have the reader just above the mag stripe slot.

I've been using a pay as you go smartcard to travel around Dublin for the last week and have no complaints, its actually a lot easier than London or Paris as its a smooth surface you drag the card over, without the awkward lump of the reader

I'll make inquires to see how long this will be an issue, potentially its long term, but for the more prepared if you insert your ticket straight in you will probably avoid triggering the reader. Obviously the solution is to get the system to allow DB issued tickets to work the gates

Are people in general having problems with magnetic cards in Connolly? Mine which was issued in August seems to have entirely packed up but there seems to be a lot of people having difficulty.

I've not had a problem and I used to go to Grand Canal Dock which wax one of the first stations to be blessed with this system.

Is it a bus and rail ticket issued by Dublin Bus? If it is its a known problem with the new gates and the on ticket smartcard

Is all else fails the taxsaver office in Connolly will replace any Irish Rail issued ticket which is defective

Nope, standard annual taxsaver point-to-point. I'll try getting a replacement. Those exit barriers really annoy me - they have since they first came in at Grand Canal Dock.

They are symbolic of the way Irish Rail treats its customers. They slam shut in front of you just as you put your ticket in and then take ages to open and let you past even when you have proven you are one of their best customers.

For the least delay insert your ticket as soon as the person ahead removes their ticket and a free flow occurs as the barrier stays open

Mag strip tickets take longer to read than the smartcard type, its certainly noticeable how quick the gates react to a smartcard compared to the old style tickets

Have the DB issued Bus and Rail annual ticket (got on RUI forum advice may I add ).
I have noticed the issue in Lansdowne road.
I always enter and exit via the ticket office side.
On exit (ie. platform side of barrier) the barrier picks up on the smartcard element of the ticket, but there is no problem going through the barrier when I put the card in.
However, coming the other way through the barrier, the ticket usually gets swallowed!!

It is. The engineer inside me knows that there is most likely a very easy solution to it too.
But 'easy solution' and 'irish rail' are generally two phrases you never see in the same sentence.

Easy solution is to allow bus/rail smartcard tickets to work as smartcards

Alas the DoT don't like the idea of solution which is better for the passenger

Any chance of RUI putting a bit of pressure on to allow this to happen?

Yes indeed we will, some inquiries required first to confirm how easy it is to implement

Just changed a dead ticket this morning and dealt with a very pleasant and efficient person. Took less than 5 minutes - well worth doing if your ticket doesn't work rather than just going through the manned gate.
