Default [24-05-10] Red Luas disruption

The Red Luas is only operating between Tallaght and Smithfield due to (another) fire in Abbey Street. Dublin Bus is accepting tram tickets in the affected area.

Surely they could have provided some service between the Point and Abbey Street?

Luas services resume after fire

A fire at a disused building in the centre of Dublin which interrrupted Luas services earlier today has been extinguished.

Three units of Dublin Fire Brigade were involved in putting out the fire which broke out early this morning in a boarded-up building on Abbey Street, between Capel Street and Liffey Street.

As a result of the blaze, Luas services from Tallaght between 8.30am and 11.30am terminated at Smithfield. Full services have since resumed.

The line had earlier been interrupted between 5.30am and 7am when the fire started. It briefly reopened before the fire reignited leading to a second interruption in services.

There are no reports of any injuries from the fire.

If Abbey Street itself is closed, I'm not sure where you can turn trams on the eastern side of it. It's also possible that the trams were caught out of position.

The points at Abbey Street only allow for a tram to run Connolly bound and return to the outbound platform

You cannot depart the outbound platform Connolly bound, its not signalled

Given the propensity of Abbey Street to catch fire, perhaps something should be done.

Can things be operated manually from the points to Abbey Street? What do the rules say?

Those points are spring loaded trailable points

There is no traffic signal to allow departure safely

The fallback position in Connolly - Point but Connolly is closed for the next week or so
