'tis Botanic Road in Belfast. Nice to see that the ideals of a 32 county Republic live on in IE.

Default 12:00 Clonsilla-Docklands

Today on the above service the PIS kept announcing "this train is for <silence>" instead of "this train is for Docklands". It managed to call out the next station announcements ok though.

Return journey 14:32 Docklands->Clonsilla kept showing Ashtown as the next station on the led display.

The new version seems to mostly work well, but is it just me or does the volume seem louder for the Irish language placenames? It comes across like robodude is shouting them out.

It's also still very short on gaps between sentences, with some messages messing a full stop, and all missing a space after the full stop, with the result that you get things like:

"This rain is for Dublin PearseThe next station is Dublin Connolly. Please have your ticket ready for validation..." (that's not exact, just an example of the sort of thing it produces).

Well, the new version of the software still goes bizarrely wrong from time to time. Yesterday I was on a train that was displaying messages like "ds3746237.mp3 Balbriggan............ds3476237.mp3 Balina". I'm assuming the MP3 files are recordings it should be sending to the audio system. The station names seemed to be a random mix of stations on our route and stations that happened to be alphabetically close. There were no audio announcements.

Oh, and as far as I know, the rules state that when the automatic PIS isn't working, the driver is supposed to announce the stations.

Good one on Wednesday evening. From Blackrock, there's a Malahide DART at 18.05 which doesn't stop at Killester, follow by an 18.10 to Howth which does, followed by another Malahide one which does.

Arrived at platform a few mins before 18.10.
Display reads: "1 Howth 5 mins."

After a few mins first line goes blank, second line reads: "2 Malahide 11 mins."
No problem there.

Then it changes to "1 Malahide 11 mins".

Just as I'm about to blow a fuse that my train has suddenly been scrapped, it comes around the bend. As it pulls up, the display changes to "1 Howth".

But the front of the train says Malahide.

At this stage I don't know if it's the Howth one, or the Malahide one which won't stop at my station.

As I get on, the platform display changes back to "1 Malahide".
But the on-board displays showed destination as Howth.

At that point I just gave up, sat down and hoped for the best. Luckily it turned out to be the right one, but god help any tourists trying to understand the system.

17:45 Howth Bray

Refurbished set 8323/8123/8339/8139/8324/8124

Got very very confused while in Dun Laoghaire. The side display went through next station Glenageary, next station Killiney all with accompanying pa before finally deciding that Sandycove was the correct next station

Of course this train doesn't even call at Killiney

I saw the 725 Dublin to Rosslare Harbour train pass Gorey this morning. It was running over 25 min late and was desplaying Athlone on its front and rear destination blind

Does anyone care in Iarnrod Eireann. I mean the fail at the most basic things. How hard is it to have a destination screen working correctly?

Latest scam in IE is not to wash the trains so you can't even read the destination display

I boarded that at Pearse this morning, the look of confusion as customers got on, then off and then quickly on again as the doors were closing without knowing what was going on.

Par for the course with IE as usual.

It's disability access - for people who suffer from a form of dyslexia that causes them to read backwards?
