Finally Ireland to get modern rail safety legislation

October 6th 2005

The final obstacle to the passing into law of the Rail Safety bill appears to have been removed. Proposals to allow the random testing of all railway staff for drink and drugs have been put forward with the backing of the Attorney General.

The Rail Safety bill will finally replace the Victorian legislation upon which much of rail safety was based which was not suitable for mondern operational and legal needs. An independent agency know as the Rail Safety Commission will then supervise all elements of rail safety including tram systems such as Luas, private and preserved railways as well as Iarnród Éireann.
