Extra Services
As it seems to be a weekly occurrence, maybe it requires its own section.

Guess Dublin Coachs new 9 daily service to Kilkenny and Waterford won't be long sorting them out considering its only 5 minutes slower than most trains. |

Interesting to see a semi-fast to Waterford bypassing Kilkenny introduced - hopefully that might become a regular daily feature.

Won't be regular, big group booking on 16.40. Cant serve Killenny & Waterford because of schedule constraints on Friday afternoons, so going by demand. A single delay of 5/10 minutes from 15.00 puts the whole schedule out for the day!
Would be excellent if it became a regular thing in next timetable but cant see it! |

Took the 16.10 and it was very well loaded however semi fast turned into semi slow with it taking 2h20m like the 16.40 because the 15.10 was delayed by 5 minutes and impacted all. |

This is probably the fastest advertised Dublin/Waterford service to date.

1h40m is very doable short term, you should get 3/4 minutes off the Cork works but Newbridge may need to be removed again. IE should perhaps revisit line speeds again before next timetable to see if any improvements can be made across the network. |

That's good news. Well done to all involved. I look forward to seeing further additions on this and other lines in due course.
At this point the PDF route timetable should be updated to include both this (Fri only) and the 16.00 ex Waterford (Fri & Sat only) services. Many folk use the online or printed PDF as their reference. Last edited by Traincustomer : 27-03-2015 at 17:48. Reason: additions |

Nice to see it become a fully scheduled regular service - maybe not daily as I suggested above, but weekly is a start.

16.15
The 16.15 service has passed IE trail period and has being updated into the JP. Being operating at around 65-70% capacity.
The 16.15 was added just over 12 months ago when IE axed 141 seats off the 15.10/16.40 so the actual gain in capacity is just 49 seats. Before the 16.15 was added there was on average between 40-70 standing on the 16.40 weekly, 70 being the highest recorded in recent times with 40 being a minimum loading weekly. Removing any stops from the 16.40 wouldn't of solved the problem either. We also know the 15.10 has issue regularly. All IE have to do now is take the 6 piece 22 off the 13.00/16.20 Dublin-Cork on Sundays and rightfully restore it to 14.10/18.05 Dublin-Waterford from September to avoid the landslide in passenger numbers which took place. DublinCoach will be on hard in September and IE will face problems retaining passengers if they don't provide capacity. The service from Kilkenny is carrying much better loads than Waterford and IE could be feeling the pinch particularly with students already. |

All they need now ensure the signalling system can keep up with speed, passing though Thomastown at a slow 50 mph, signal which controls Derrynahinch and Kiltorcan crossings only changes when the train is practically about to stop despite a signal before Kiltorcan which is the crossing causing the hold up. The biggest issue is Lavistown when the line is fully clear the train must stop before it gets cleared into the loop and more less stop on the loop before been cleared out of the other side. Is it just a rubbish system as why is clearing a train into sections so difficult there when for example clearing trains in/out of stations takes seconds if crossing or the line is fully clear before the train even arrives yet switching a set of points here cannot be completed in advance and there would be no lc issues. The 07.10 up appears to get a clear run around Lavistown and that with a level crossing immediately after it re-joins main line. Perhaps so modification took place? Given drivers are fully aware of line speeds the amount of danger signals displayed more less requires the train to slow miles from where it should entering the loop and even with that slowing down they still can't manage to clear. Easily 3+ minutes wasted and another 2+ south of Thomastown. |
