Homes evacuated in Lurgan

Blast and petrol bombs were thrown at police today in Co Armagh.

Riot police were called in after trouble erupted during a security alert in Lake Street, Lurgan. Up to 15 houses were evacuated in the staunchly republican area.

Police appealed for calm but said there were no injuries. The railway line was also closed as a result of the security incident.

In the early hours of this morning it was reported that a suspicious object had been seen in the area. Army technical officers are examining something at the scene.

Lake Street and part of Antrim Road remain closed.

Train services disrupted by a bomb alert on the railway line near Lurgan, Co Armagh have resumed.

Six PSNI officers suffered minor injuries when they were attacked by a crowd throwing blast and petrol bombs during disturbances which followed the bomb scare.

A number of families were evacuated during the alert which turned out to be a hoax.

Train services are now running normally again between Dublin and Belfast.

The Acting Chairman of the Policing Board condemned those responsible for the blast and petrol bomb attack on officers in Lurgan.

Brian Rea said the officers were out doing their job, protecting the community in Lurgan and to be attacked in this way was despicable.

He said that such needless acts of violence have caused disruption within the local community, and put not just these officer's lives at risk but also the people living in the area.

Mr Rea said that this small minority were not contributing in any way to moving Northern Ireland forward and he called on anyone with information to contact the PSNI immediately.
