Default Mega delays due to mk4 failure

"The 1700 from Heuston failed somewhere between Knocklong and Charleville (reportedly close to Charleville). It was initially intended to bring the 1705 Heuston to Tralee (an ICR) back to Limerick Junction to allow the 1800 Heuston to Cork come up behind and push the failure into Charleville. Around 2000 a relief engine was dispatched from Cork arriving at the failed train around 2100. It proved impossible to move the failed train with the original train engine attached and so this was removed and brought forward (to Charleville ?). The rescue engine then returned to the stranded carriages arriving in Charleville at 2317. Cork was reached at 2356, followed by the 1800, 1900 and 2100 which arrived in Cork at 0016, 0023 and 0036 respectively.

The 1705 Tralee and the connection off the 1900 from Heuston arrived in Tralee, one block apart sometime after 0100.

Something of the order of 1500 passengers were stranded by this incident, the majority at remote locations, with the 2100 being held as far back as Thurles."

a total disaster. at least the proper refund proceedure was carried out in cork - dont know about tralee/intermediate stops.


most modern fleet in europe.

Does Irish Rail provide free refreshments and taxis to the intended destination as well as full refunds in these circumstances?

I'm pretty sure that's what happens in the UK.

I also wonder what the typical take-up of refunds is, given that you have to go the effort of having to claim it back.

Free refreshments but never enough for everybody and they did provide transport for those who needed on the night.

Full refunds usually apply as well and its not a major thing to claim so suspect it was a costly night but all of their own doing for wasting so much time and/or the unavailability of a pilot man.

Not necessarily, a remote pilotman can be appointed in CTC.

I see, wasn't aware they had authority to do it from Connolly. It sums up the night then, complete lack of responsiveness from IE. These failures happen but the aftermath and IEs response is lacking again. Of course all are different but its not an excuse.

i was contacted by people who were told to telephone the next day, and they were having problems still on the monday. i assume it was all sorted out.
