Default [Article] Workers at Irish Rail reject cost saving measures

Quote:
SIPTU workers in Irish Rail have voted by 71pc to 29pc to reject proposals from the Labour Relations Commission in relation to changes to their employment.

Bear in mind NBRU are a significant union in IE, so still awaiting the result from them

SIPTU members at Iarnród Éireann are to ballot for strike action after they narrowly rejected a Labour Court recommendation on cost reduction plans at the state rail company.
Given the such narrow rejection realistically a strike is probaly unlikely?

Default Two Questions

By law how much notice do unions in the Irish Republic have to give of a strike? I just wasted some time on google trying to find the answer without success.

Also in the event of a train not running because of a strike are you entitled to a 100% refund?

7 days notice is required by law

Yes you are entitled to a refund on any ticket sold prior to the strike being announced

Happens in the event of a strike if you are an annual ticket holder, are you entitled to a refund for those days you have to get alternative transport.

You should be, but you get into a legal issue with taxsaver tickets

Surely the legal issue wouldn't arise if the refund was less than expenses incurred in getting to work by alternate means. Really the fair thing to happen would be for Irish Rail to cover the cost of getting to work by whatever means possible.

SIPTU have called a 24hr strike for the 25th August and an on-going work to rule including and overtime and rest day work ban. NBRU voting at present.

Surely an arrangement could be made that if you travel by bus, you could just send in your ticket and get a refund.

Assumes you will be able to get a bus, that should in theory work.

Taxsaver is an issue as any cash returned to the customer is taxable

On the other hand taking money from people (taxsaver ticket) and not providing the means of transport is an injustice.
